Robert George Schmidt
Robert George Schmidt, age 87, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014, at home of congestive heart failure. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 29, 1927, he and his identical twin Richard were adopted by the Reverend Carl and Edith Schmidt. Robert graduated from Cambria High School. A Korean War veteran, he returned home to marry the love of his life, Barbara Jean Hoffman of Fox Lake, in a ceremony on the campus of the Homme Lutheran Children’s Home in Wittenberg, WI. He retired from General Motors in 1997, after a career as the Second Shift Material Scheduler at the Janesville Assembly Plant. When unexpected parts problems threatened a possible shut down of the operation, coworkers relied for decades on “Night Shift Bob” to keep the lines running on schedule. Raised in the Lutheran Church, he sang duets from an early age with his brother Richard. After moving his young family to Janesville in 1957, Robert joined First Lutheran Church, and began a 40-year vocation as a popular vocalist for weddings and funerals throughout south central Wisconsin. In the 1980’s, Schmidt recorded a compilation of his favorite soloist selections that remain a popular request to this day among fans of traditional Christian music.
Robert is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Robert (Stevie) Schmidt of Libertyville, IL, Randy (Mary) Schmidt of Fort Wayne, IN, and Tamara (Eric) Berge of Apple Valley MN; 5 grandchildren: Sarah Schmidt Georgia (Ryan), RJ Schmidt (Jen), Kevin, Laura and Katherine Berge; and 4 great-grandchildren: Grady & Logan Georgia and Kayla & Bo Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Richard (Joan) Schmidt and Carl (Rosemary) Schmidt.
A Visitation will be held at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH in Janesville this Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. There will be refreshments served immediately following the service.
