Robert Connor O’Malley
Robert Connor O’Malley Jr., age 89, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014. He was born in Madison on February9, 1925, the son of Robert Connor and Ursula (Brennan) O’Malley.
Bob’s first home was in Shorewood Hills. With the passing of his father when he was 3 years old his mother took up the role of mother and father for the family through the Depression and World War II. He attended Blessed Sacrament, Edgewood High School, graduating from West High School in 1942. He proudly served his country in the Navy in World War II. As an Officer Candidate he attended, Lawrence College, Harvard, and The University of Notre Dame. He graduated from the UW and got his Law Degree from the UW Law School. As a Trustee of Edgewood College for 35 years he was proudly awarded an Honorary Degree.
Bob began his career in 1953 at Madison Bank & Trust Co. The bank later became part of United Banks of Wisconsin, retiring as the Chairman and CEO, a Director of Valley Bancorporation and Vice-Chairman Southern District of M&I Bank in 1988. He was a past President of The Wisconsin Banker’s Association, served as Chairman of United Way of Madison, a member of the Wisconsin Society of CPA’s, Chairman of the Real Estate Tax Board of Review and a member of the Finance Committee at Oakwood Village Continuing Care Retirement Communities.
Bob met his first wife Mary Ellen at a freshman dance at Edgewood High School. They married in 1946 and raised five children on the near Westside of Madison. Bob lost his wife, Mary Ellen, in 1993 and took over the role of father and mother to his children.The family annually vacationed at Panama City Beach, Fla. where Bob’s greatest enjoyment was swimming in the waves, the Bishop’s Charity football game, hunting sand crabs in the dark, conducting sing-alongs and bedside prayers with his 17 grandchildren.
Bob was a role model for his family. With a twinkle in his eye and an infectious smile he generously provided guidance that if you can imagine it, you can achieve it, if you can dream it, you can become it.
Bob married his second wife, Sammy (Beaubien), in 1996. They enjoyed their time together in Madison and Scottsdale, Arizona.In addition,they appreciated the time withtheir family and friends. Together they enjoyed being Badgers’ fans over the years.
Survivors include his wife, Sammy; children Sally (Michael Dooley), Robert III (Deborah), Michael (Paula), Dennis (Katherine) and Colleen and 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Robert andUrsula; first wife Mary Ellen (Meuer); siblings, Elizabeth Chickering and Mary Burch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday June 6, 2014, at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Dr., Madison, with Father Bart Timmerman presiding. A visitation will take place at the church on Friday from 9:00a.m. until the time of the Mass. Entombment will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
