Robert “Bob” Niemann

Robert “Bob” Niemann

Robert “Bob” F. Niemann, aged 91, passed peacefully on January 5, 2018.

He was born to Robert A. and Blanche (Schalenberg) Niemann and raised in Madison, graduating from East High School in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17, served on the U.S.S. Kimberly, and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He married his high school sweetheart Coletta Back on August 16, 1947 and recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. Bob was employed at Wisconsin Foundry and Machine Company for 40+ years. He raised his family on the north side of Madison, residing in the same home for over 60 years, moving to Sun Prairie a few years ago.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 8483. Many Navy reunions were enjoyed in Myrtle Beach SC. He flew on the inaugural Badger Honor Flight out of Madison. The attention he and other veterans received that day amazed him.

Bob and Coletta were charter members of St. Peter Catholic Church. Bob was very active in the church, serving as an usher and assisting with funerals.

His favorite activities included traveling, camping, fishing, hunting, playing cards, watching Badger and Packer games, woodworking, and curling. He was very mechanical and could repair anything. Bob took his family on many camping trips to State and National Parks, especially out west. Together he and his wife enjoyed many years traveling in their RV.

Bob was blessed with an abundance of family. He is survived by his wife Coletta, children Bonnie (John) Kees of Madison, Jack (Corinne) Niemann of Sun Prairie, Cindy (Steve) Frank of McFarland, Nancy (Ron) Rapp of Lisle IL, Jane (Dave) Hosking of Black Earth, Jim (Jessica) Niemann of Rio, and Elizabeth (Tim) Haines of Boscobel. Fourteen grandchildren: Matt Marks, Maria Jergovic, Mitchell Marks, Daniel Niemann; Angela Poster, Brandon Frank, Emily and Nicole Rapp, Adam and Alex Davenport, Jeremy Niemann, Kalista Halvorsen, and Carli and Sydney Haines, and eleven great grandchildren.

He is survived by his brother David Niemann, sisters-in-law Barbara Niemann and Rosemary Schlicht, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Charlene Pollow, brothers DeWayne and Walter Fischer, sister-in-law Marion Schmidt, brothers-in-law Neil Schlicht and David Schmidt.
