Robert A. Mercer
MONONA-Robert A. Mercer (Bob), age 77, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare.
He was born Robert Arnold Frasier in Madison, the son of Raymond O. Frasier and Marie C. Arnold. His father died on Feb. 16, 1939. Marie married Quentin G. Mercer and Quentin adopted Bob on Feb. 4, 1941. Bob married Dorothy Lewis and had two sons, James and Wesley. He divorced and married Ruth Susseck and had one son, Steven. He later married Barbara J. McClure and blended their two families together.
Bob graduated from West High School in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 until 1959 on the U.S.S. Bremerton. Bob started his career as a milk driver for Bowmen Dairy. In the 1970’s he opened Bob’s Food Stores in, Cambridge, Deerfield and Marshall. He owned and operated several business including, Park Place Supper Club, a liquor store, a clothing store and a catering business. The businesses were sold and Bob and Barb moved to Scottsdale, AZ. They started a commercial real estate business in Arizona and lived there for 10 years. Next, they moved to San Antonio, TX, where he was area manager for the United States Chamber of Commerce. In 1990, Bob and Barb moved back to the Madison area at which time they bought Pitcher’s Pub and owned and operated that business for 22 years before retiring. Bob was an active member of the Dane County Tavern League, serving on the board of directors and as chair of the Safe Ride Program committee.
Bob is survived by, his wife, Barb; children, James Mercer, Wesley Mercer, Steven (Robin) Mercer, Tracey McClure, Timothy (Suzette) McClure and Tiffany (Scott) Swatek; grandchildren, Megan Rockhill, Ryan Rockhill, Martin Swatek, Ashley Swatek, David McClure, Destini Egan, Julia Mercer and Brooke Mercer; great-grandchildren, Carter, Noah and Avah. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held at PITCHER’S PUB, 323 W Beltline Hwy, Madison from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., on Saturday, June 7, 2014. There will be a sharing of memories beginning at around 2:30 p.m.
