Rifle stolen from Madison returned 47 years later

MADISON, Wis. — A Nazi-era rifle will soon be returned to a local woman 47 years after it was stolen from her father in Madison.

In 1973, a 41-year-old Madison deer hunter had his German Mauser rifle stolen from the back of his truck, according to Madison police.

Officials say the gun was recently returned to police in Centerville, Ohio, about 25 miles south of Columbus.

Police spokesperson Joel Despain said this instance should show that police have pretty detailed records of everything, even nearly a half-century later.

Despain said police don’t know where the rifle was before being returned in Centerville, but do know that the gun’s owner passed away in 1988.

He said his daughter still lives in the area and authorities plan on returning the rifle to her as a reminder of her father.
