RICHLAND CENTER, Wis. — A Richland County sheriff’s deputy was arrested for sexual assault Tuesday following an investigation into allegations of misconduct involving a correctional officer, the Wisconsin Department of Justice said.

The 31-year-old deputy, who began working for the Richland County Sheriff’s Office in March 2021, has been put on administrative leave, the justice department said in a news release Tuesday afternoon. He is expected to face a charge of second-degree sexual assault — sexual contact with an individual who is confined in a correctional institution by a correctional staff member.

He has not been formally charged as of Tuesday night; as such, News 3 Now is not naming him at this time as part of a policy not to name people accused of crimes until they have been formally charged in court. Click here to learn more about the policy.

After learning of allegations of misconduct by a correctional officer, Richland County Sheriff asked the DOJ to conduct an independent investigation. The release did not say when the sheriff learned of the allegations.

The Vernon County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute the case.
