STOUGHTON-Richard “Lefty” Nelson, age 98, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, with his family by his side.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1916, in Stoughton to Helmer and Minnie (Hermanson) Nelson. He married Arlene Strommen on March 28, 1938. Richard and Arlene farmed in the Town of Dunn for 60 years until his retirement. They raised tobacco and had dairy, beef, chickens and pigs. He had great pride in his farm. Richard was a pitcher on the Stoughton Home Talent baseball team and they won the pennant in 1945.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Charlotte (Dennis) Ebert, Dianne (John) Detra and Dawn (Richard) Wethal; eleven grandchildren, Curt Barth, Scott (Patti) Barth, Craig (Jenni) Onsrud, Scott Ebert, Tim Ebert; Sandy (Steve) Briski, Julie (Perry) Halverson, Neil (Kelly) Detra, Michael Detra, Brian (Lisa) Wethal and Deb Wethal; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law, Donna Shelhamer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; son, Robert; two sisters, Clarice and Beverly; brother, Rodger; brothers-in-law, Howard and Bill; and sister-in-law, Ellen. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL HOME, 1351 Hwy 51 at Jackson St., Stoughton, at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014.
Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service on Tuesday with a luncheon to follow at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
