MADISON/MONONA—Richard M. Gregory, age 86, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at Oak Park Place. Dick was born on June 3, 1926, in Lafayette, Ind. to Raymond W. and Bertha Jane (Morgan) Gregory. Dick grew up in West Lafayette, Ind.; Ithaca, N.Y.; and Washington, D.C. from where he graduated from high school. Dick attended Purdue University receiving his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Engineering after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Harriet R. Bigalow on Aug. 27, 1949 in Shaker Heights, Ohio. They moved to Madison, in 1951, then to Monona, in 1953 and back to Madison in 2001.

Dick retired in May 1990 after working for 39 years for Wisconsin Power & Light Company as the Director of Fuel Services. He was active in the Monona United Methodist Church where he was a charter member. He served on the Monona Library Board of Trustees for 14 years and as its president for seven of those years. Dick served on the Monona Public Works Committee for five years and received the City of Monona 1997 Distinguished Service award and the South Central Library System 1997 Outstanding Library Trustee service award. He was past president of the Monona Grove Lions Club and more recently past president of the East Madison/Monona Optimist Club, which he was still an active member. Dick was also past chairman of several Boy Scout committees, a member of the Board of Directors of the Ecumenical Housing Corporation and of the Madison Methodist Union.

Dick had a life-long interest in agriculture as he and his brother, Robert Gregory of Mooresville, Ind., owned and operated several farms in Indiana. Dick also shared a passion of bird-watching with his brother and Harriet. Dick and Harriet enjoyed camping and traveling in the United States and around the world with their family in the early years as well as traveling extensively in their retirement and visiting Elderhostels.

Survivors include his seven children, Bob (Judy Andrews) Gregory of Granville, N.Y., Jim (Antoinette) of Aurora, Ill., Barbara Gregory of Cambridge, Susan Gregory of Ypsilanti, Mich., Joan (Steve) Misustin of McFarland, Doug (Kathy) Gregory of Middleton, and Laurel (Shilpi Banerjee) Gregory of Hillsboro, Ore.; and eight grandchildren, Jim and Jason Gregory, Sarah and Keith Misustin, Aaron, Kyle and Lauren Gregory, and Lucette Olson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Harriet; and a grandson, Jonathon Gregory.

Funeral services will be held at MONONA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 606 Nichols Road, Monona, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, with Pastor David Byers-Dent presiding. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Albert Musa for his loving care throughout the years and for the support and friendships of those at The Arbors and Oak Park Place who filled his past 3 years with warmth, compassion and fun. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Monona Public Library or to Monona United Methodist Church in Dick’s name.

Dick and his cheery disposition will be missed by all who have known him.
