Richard D. “Dick” Kopp
Richard “Dick” Kopp, age 87, died peacefully at home on January 19, 2018, with his beloved family and dog, Bandit, by his side.
He was born in Madison on September 4, 1930, the son of Walter W. and Hildegard (Lange) Kopp. Dick graduated from West High School in 1948 and joined the Air Force where he was in the Military Police until his discharge in 1949. He married Dorothy Mae Conley on June 2, 1951 and the two enjoyed 47 years of marriage until her death in 1998.
Dick began his illustrious 26 year political career in 1960 as a member of the Madison City Council, where he served as alderman of the 18th ward and then president. He was also a school board member and president, a charter member of Cherokee Country Club, and served on the Cherokee Park, Inc. board of directors.
Dick’s highly successful 48 year career with American Family Insurance started in the home office, after which he became an agent and then a District Manager. His well deserved retirement occurred in 1998.
In 2002, Dick married Colleen Schomburg.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Colleen Kopp; children, Steve (Barb) Kopp, Kathy Kopp (John Rakow), Sue Kopp and Sherry Kopp Gehl; stepchildren, Lynn (Joe) Hitt, and Mike Schomburg; grandchildren, Paul (Christina) Neustadter, Brian (Marie) Kopp, Rick (Sarah) Neustadter, Chloe Gehl, and Nicolas Gehl; stepgrandchildren, Ryan (Stephanie) Hitt, Reid Hitt (Katie), Mikaela (Jake) Dams, Sean Hitt (Megan), Hayden, Jetta and Evan Schomburg; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Robert (Harriett) Kopp, Paul (Judy) Kopp, and Wally Kopp; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Kopp; son, Timothy Kopp; grandson, Adam Richard Kopp; sister, Carolyn (Jim) Mohoney; and sister-in-law, Ninfa Kopp.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Agrace HospiceCare, especially Allison Bacon and Melenie Brooks, for their exceptional care of Dick.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, January 26, 2018, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home on Friday. A luncheon will follow at Kavanaugh’s Esquire Club.
