Richard A Bortz
DEFOREST/BEAVER DAM – Richard A. Bortz, age 70, passed away Friday evening, June 20, 2014, with family by his side, at Agrace Hospice in Madison, WI.
Richard was born in Beaver Dam, WI on February 3, 1944 to Herbert and Annetta (Zepp) Bortz. He was raised on a farm in rural Beaver Dam, attended a country grade school in his early years and then attended St. Stephen’s Lutheran School in town. Richard graduated from Beaver Dam Sr. High School in 1962. Richard entered the Air Force after graduation and was a member of the Wisconsin Air National Guard. He worked as a Special Vehicle Repairman for 38 years before retiring in 2003. Richard married Carolyn Bremer on September 23, 1967 in Beaver Dam.
In past years, he played softball on the Air National Guard and Club 51 softball teams. He also tried bowling and curling and liked to play what he told his sons was “non-contact” basketball. The family teased him about ending up in the ER after his first “non-contact” game. He and Carolyn also liked to ride bikes around the lake in Madison.
After retirement, Richard worked for Golds Gym and the Princeton Club as a maintenance mechanic. He also worked for several years at Waltco/PDS, in DeForest, as a courier. Richard was a family handyman who helped his children with numerous projects. There wasn’t much he couldn’t fix. Richard loved sports and in his spare time, he was a Packers and Badger football/basketball fan who took control of the TV remote on week-ends.
Richard is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carolyn; children, Scott (Beth), Penni Bortz-Chapman, and Tim (Angie); 7 grandchildren, Allison, Christopher, Marc, Trisha, Abigail, Alexis, and Evan; and, 1 great-granddaughter, Kiera, who captured his heart; siblings, Joanne Goodrich, Jean (Ralph) Desjarlais, Jerald (Betty), Barbara (Donald) Gensch all of Beaver Dam, and Wayne (Barbara) of DePere, WI. He is further survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Monita Hupf, in May 2014, brothers-in-law Jerome Hupf and Donald Goodrich, and a niece, Debra Sires.
A memorial service will be held at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 6924 Lake Road, DeForest, WI, at 4:00PM on Friday, June 27, 2014, with Pastor Jerry Olson officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00PM until the time of service at 4:00PM. A private burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park at a later date.
The family wishes to thank the staff of UW Home Health and Agrace Hospice for exceptional care and support given to Richard in the last few months.
