Response groups in need of winter clothes donations for Afghan refugees
SPARTA, Wis. — Response organizations are asking for more clothing donations for Afghan refugees as the weather starts to get cooler.
Organizers with Team Rubicon, a group working to gather donations for those being housed at Fort McCoy, are asking people to donate winter clothing in smaller sizes — from medium and down.
“As many of them fled with only the clothes on their back and very few belongings there is an immediate need for winter clothing and shoes,” Angie Salazar, federal coordinator for Operation Allies Welcome Through our partners at the Salvation Army, Team Rubicon American Red Cross, we are asking Wisconsinites to help.
They’re also asking that anyone who buys children’s clothing to buy plain clothes instead of ones with animals or other graphics.
Those collecting donations said they’re in need of winter shoes in men’s sizes 7-9 and women’s sizes 5-7.
Four Salvation Army locations throughout the state are currently accepting donations, including the Dane County site located at 3030 Darbo Dr. in Madison. The other locations are in Oak Creek, La Crosse and Wausau.
A list of other resources and organizations working to help the refugees is available on the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families’ website.
