Republicans say elections audit shows changes needed

Republican critics of the board that oversees elections and ethics law in Wisconsin say a new audit shows that an overhaul is needed.

The Audit Bureau released its long-awaited report on the Government Accountability Board on Friday. It found numerous problems with the board’s operation, and made recommendations for improvement, but did not say it should be abolished.

That’s not stopping Republicans in control of the Legislature who have been angered in recent years over a number of issues, including how the board handled recall elections and its approving of an investigation related to Gov. Scott Walker’s recall campaign in 2012.

Republican Sen. Alberta Darling calls the GAB a “rogue agency” and GOP Rep. Dean Knudson says changing the board will be a top priority next year.
