Report: UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez expected to announce retirement

UW’s Alvarez signs contract extension through 2021

MADISON, Wis. — After more than three decades serving the Badgers in a variety of roles, Barry Alvarez is reportedly planning to announce his retirement.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, an announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

Since Alvarez took over the Badgers football program in the late 1980s, Wisconsin has experienced among the most success in the Big Ten. Alvarez led the Badgers to three Big Ten titles, three Rose Bowls, and served two stints as interim head coach for bowl games (going 1-1).

The Journal Sentinel said Alvarez could stay on through July, which would be weeks before the start of the 2021-22 athletic season.

Alvarez has served as UW’s Athletic Director since 2006.
