Report: Man killed in Columbia County crash was former Sun Prairie High School coach
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — 66-year-old Stephen Riggins, who was killed with his dog in a crash in Columbia County on Friday morning, was a former Sun Prairie High School cross country and track and field coach, according to the Sun Prairie Star.
The Sun Prairie Star said Riggins coached cross country and track and field for 24 years at Sun Prairie before retiring in 2008. An article said the Cardinals won Big Eight Conference championships in the 1992 and ’93 seasons.
Riggins, of rural Poynette, was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday after police said an Alliant Energy utility truck failed to stop at a stop sign and hit Riggins’ vehicle.
Officials said Riggins and his dog, who was inside the vehicle with him, were both dead at the scene.
The Columbia Columbia Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
In a statement, Alliant Energy said it is cooperating with local officials and will conduct its own internal safety investigation.
The Sun Prairie Star said funeral visitation will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church.
