Report makes 146 recommendations to the MPD
MADISON, Wis. — Madison officers and City Council members are learning more about an extensive report on the city’s Police Department by a California consulting firm. The 244 page report has 146-page recommendations for the MPD.
OIR, the consulting group that made the report addressed some of their recommendations at a special meeting Thursday. One of their biggest suggestions was to have more civilian oversight. That includes creating a separate advisory group led by an auditor that would “give an unvarnished perspective of what’s going on inside the Police Department.” It would be separate from the police and fire commission. OIR pointed out issues with use of force and racial disparity but said the department was doing well when it came to programs to address systemic inequity.
OIR representatives said they had the full cooperation of the Madison police, with access to sensitive documents and everyone from command staff to patrol officers.
