Red Cross holds blood drive to boost supply ahead of Fourth of July weekend

MADISON, Wis. — The American Red Cross is looking to boost its blood supply just before the holiday weekend.

The group held its 22nd-annual Madison Beach Days blood drive at the Sheraton Hotel on John Nolen Drive on Friday.

When donations drop, so does the blood supply, making it challenging to ensure blood is available when hospitals need it.

“You just never know when you’re going to need blood, so this blood drive is really intentionally planned before the holiday to be able to have that blood on the shelves for people in need,” said Laura McGuire, the regional communications manager for the American Red Cross of Wisconsin.

The Red Cross sees a roughly 21% decline in blood and platelet donations during holiday weeks, including the Fourth of July.
