Portage Police Department kills sandhill crane
PORTAGE, Wis. — Officers with the Portage Police Department purposefully killed a sandhill crane over the weekend.
The crane was killed near Brittingham Court and Hamilton Street in Portage on Sunday afternoon.
Officers said they had received several complaints about the crane causing damage to properties in the area.
According to a release by the Portage Police Department, officers and residents had tried several nonlethal methods to deter the crane from causing damage. They said all had been exhausted and unsuccessful, according to the release.
In April, the Portage Police Department was awarded a permit from the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to harvest up to two sandhill cranes in that specific area.
The permit to kill the crane was effective between April 29, 2019, and March 31, 2020.
