Porchlight, Inc. – Creating a Sense of Community

Madison Magazine: Please describe your involvement with Porchlight, Inc.
Richard: I work for Porchlight Products making jams, scone mixes, pancake mixes, applesauce, sauerkraut, and pickled items to sell to local restaurants and grocery stores. I have been working for Porchlight for almost five years and I really enjoy the work. I also work special events, like the Porchlight’s Annual Dinner and the Chef’s Auction selling our products to those who attend.

MM: What has been the most beneficial element of this organization for you?
Richard: Learning how to do new things, like making the products, keeping accurate manufacturing records in our log books, and supervising other employees. I also enjoy how I get to make new friends and the work keeps me busy and active in the community.

MM: How has Porchlight Inc. and its events enhanced the Madison community?
Porchlight and our events enhance the community by allowing the community to get involved in a meaningful way. Many of us see the people living on the streets; even if we don’t see them, we know they are there. Our events allow for community members to support the change they want to see in the Madison Community.

MM: Please tell us about Porchlight’s Original Chef’s Auction held on February 25th, 2016.
Porchlight’s Chef’s Auction is an event to benefit our Porchlight Products program. This program teaches individuals with physical and mental disabilities, how to create fresh and local products we sell to the community. The money earned from sales goes back into hiring more employees in our job training program. The Chefs Auction will feature ten of Madison’s best chefs and restaurant, who prepare one-of-a-kind dishes that feature our Porchlight Products as an ingredient in some way. The live auction portion of the night will offer eight dinner party packages that were designed by the chefs themselves.

MM: How can the community get involved with both the Porchlight Chef’s Auction and the organization as a whole?
For anyone interested in attending the event, they can email me at jpastelin@porchlightinc.org to RSVP by February 15th. Businesses can get involved by either promoting our event, or donating to the silent auction portion of the event. To get involved with Porchlight, please visit our website for all volunteer opportunities and donation needs at www.porchlightinc.org.

MM: What do you want others to know about Porchlight, Inc.?
There are many reasons a person or family can become homeless. Every person who stays in our housing receives case management services. This allows us to focus on getting them off the streets, into stable housing with acceptable living conditions, while also working to prevent the cycle of poverty from continuing.
