MADISON, Wis. — Officials with the Madison Police Department are continuing to warn residents to keep their cars and homes locked to fend off potential burglars.

An SUV and several wallets were taken from a home Saturday morning in the 3500 block of Manchester Road when a burglar gained access to the residence with a garage door opener that was found inside the unlocked SUV, according to an incident report. The vehicle was found Saturday night in a Brittany Place parking lot, police said.

In December, Madison police received 56 reports of stolen vehicles. Police said of that number, 54 of them had keys inside or had keys readily accessible to thieves. According to the report, 29 of the 56 vehicles that were reported stolen were unlocked and running at the time they were taken. Police arrested 13 juveniles, two 17-year-olds and three adults on tentative auto theft related charges that same month.
