Police: Theft suspect fled to restaurant roof
Diners asked to stay in restaurant while police make arrest
MADISON, Wis. — A man suspected of stealing tools from an East Towne Mall store fled to the roof of a nearby restaurant before being arrested, according to Madison police.
A security officer at Sears told police he attempted to stop a retail theft suspect Friday afternoon, but backed off when the man reached for a brown handle in a black satchel he was wearing. The security officer thought the handle was part of a gun.
Police said the thief dropped stolen tools worth more than $400 as he fled. A witness told police the thief was in a dumpster at a nearby Chili’s restaurant and later saw the man on the roof of the restaurant.
Diners at the restaurant were asked to stay inside while police got the man down.
Police said Robert Lynn, 39, was arrested on suspicion of retail theft and disorderly conduct while armed. Police determined the handle seen by the security guard was part of an ax.
