Police search for people connected to crash off Beltline

Dane County deputies and other law enforcement officers are looking for three people who were connected to a chase on the Beltline early Thursday morning.

The chase started when a Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy tried to pull a vehicle over on suspicion of speeding on the Beltline near I-39-90 in the town of Blooming Grove around 4:10 a.m. Thursday.

According to the sheriff’s department, the driver sped away, and a pursuit was initiated. Sheriff’s officials said the SUV was headed west on the Beltline, took the Broadway off-ramp when the vehicle lost control and crashed through a fence. Sheriff’s officials said four people ran from the vehicle.

Deputies were able to retain one man, 21-year-old Eugene Crosby, who was taken to the hospital, but it is not known if he was the driver.

A K-9 search was initiated for the other three people in the SUV, but the K-9 was unsuccessful in finding any of the other occupants, according to the sheriff’s department.

Sheriff’s deputies initiated a new search about 7 a.m. Thursday after there were reports of two people hiding in the marsh south of the Beltline.

Deputies confirmed all four were in an SUV that was stolen from Sun Prairie overnight when the incident happened.

The sheriff’s office said Crosby is expected to face a charge of party to a crime of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
