Police: Man under the influence who stole car briefly pinned in crash
MADISON, Wis. — A 28-year-old Madison man is facing charges after he stole a car while under the influence, hitting two other cars and then lit up a stogie while waiting for his arrest, police said.
Police said a woman was warming up her car at her home on Judd Street about 6:45 a.m. when a man took it.
According to the report, when the woman confronted him, he said, “I need this,” and drove off.
Police said made it about 2 miles. Witnesses reported seeing him driving at an estimated 90 mph as he gunned the stolen car south on South Stoughton Road. He sideswiped one car before rear-ending another in the 1800 block. The car that was hit by the stolen car was sent through a grassy median and across across a frontage road before it came to rest in the parking lot of the Blooming Grove Fire Department.
The alleged car thief, Jeramie D. McClain, of Madison, was pinned inside the vehicle he was driving, police said. As officers arrived, he lit up a cigar.
Police said no one was seriously injured in the incident. McClain was taken to a hospital before being arrested on several tentative charges including second-offense operating while impaired, reckless driving, hit and run, operating after revocation and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Dane County officials said three cars were involved.
