Police: Man spent 6 hours in closed Expo Hall stealing

A man working inside the Alliant Energy Center stole about $10,000 worth of goods from vendors, according to a news release.

The Town of Madison Police said the Alliant Energy Center was hosting two events Thursday at the Expo Center: an Outdoor Reps Show and the Bhakti Fest Midwest.

According to a news release, at about 11 p.m., two people contracted by Bhakti Fest Midwest entered the Outdoor Reps Show hall while a crew was cleaning. Both left about 30 minutes later, but at about midnight, one of them 25-year-old Jason J. Bailey, of Eugene, Oregon, returned.

Police said Bailey spent the next six hours in the closed Expo Hall stealing equipment from 17 vendors and dodging the cleaning crew.

“Based on the surveillance video, the suspect was clearly aware of where the cleaning people were and did his best to remain undectected,” Town of Madison Police said in the release.

At about 10 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a theft at the Expo Hall.

Police identified Bailey from surveillance video and arrived at this hotel room at the Clarion at about 3:15 p.m. and arrested him. Officers recovered and returned stolen property before the vendors had to leave town.

Police said many of the stolen items were one-of-a-kind prototypes and were not replaceable. Some of the items were not slated for a public market release until 2016.

Bailey was taken to Dane County Jail and charged with one count of burglary to a room and 17 counts of theft.
