A man was arrested after pulling a knife on a group of people at a downtown Madison bar early Sunday morning, according to a release from Madison police.

Officers were called to Hawk’s Bar & Grill at 425 State St. at 1:11 a.m. for a report of a disturbance.

Police said Ryan M. Ellwanger, 21, of Menomonie, had been trying to fist bump with a group of mostly women and sit at their table. They said he pulled a knife when the boyfriend of one of the women asked him to go away.

Ellwanger told police he carries the knife for protection.
