Police: Drunken driver drove SUV across sidewalk, through pedestrian-only area, onto State Street
MADISON, Wis. — A drunken driver failed to stop late Tuesday night at the dead-end of North Frances Street, then proceeded to drive across a sidewalk, through a pedestrian-only area and onto State Street, where vehicles are not allowed to drive, a police report said.
A police officer was in the area and watched the driver. The officer got behind the SUV, activated the squad vehicle’s siren and followed the driver, who was slow to pull over. The car stopped at the intersection of State Street and West Gorham Street.
Byron F. Ramirez-Urbina, 31 years old, was arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and fleeing an officer. Police said he was also cited for driving on a sidewalk, failure to obey a boulevard ordinance, operating without a license and spitting in public.
“When I arrived, there were many people out on foot or bicycle. This was a busy Tuesday night and given the driver of the vehicle was at one time on the sidewalk and then driving on State Street, it is fortunate no one was injured,” a scene sergeant wrote in his report.
