Police: Death of Beloit man not connected to area violence

Police said a man who was found injured on a Beloit street in early August died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Beloit police Chief Norm Jacobs said in a release Thursday morning that the death of 20-year-old Hykyme Hayes is considered a suicide.

“Mr. Hayes’ … death was not from a violent or illegal relationship with a criminal,” Jacobs said.

Police responded to a report of a man down on Aug. 7 at about midnight. Officers found Hayes lying on the sidewalk in the 500 block of Eighth Street suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital. Autopsy results are consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. DNA evidence eliminated other subjects handling the gun and statements Hayes made prior to the shooting were suggestive of suicidal thoughts.

Jacobs said earlier this month that the department was investigating six shooting deaths from 2014.

“With the concern over other recent gun violence incidents, we wish to have been able to release this information sooner, but early release of our suspicions would have hindered (the) investigation,” Jacobs said in the release.
