Police: Con men pretend to be city employees, rob old woman’s home
MADISON, Wis. — Con men pretending to be city of Madison employees hit the Richmond Hills neighborhood Sunday afternoon.
One went to the door of an older resident on Lynchburg Trail and told her there was a water contamination issue in the area, according to a release from the Madison Police Department.
He said he had already been inside a neighbor’s home, and asked to come into the home and take a look at the woman’s water. He took the woman to the basement to check the faucets, officials said.
While the two were in the basement, a second con man came inside and stole jewelry from her bedroom. He then yelled down the stairs that they were good to go, according to the release.
The two men drove off in a newer blue SUV. The victim described the first con man as a white man in his 30s with a dark beard and wearing a black baseball cap and a black North Face coat, officials said.
The Madison Police Department advised that if a stranger asks to enter your home, ask for photo identification, and if something doesn’t feel right, call the Madison Police Department, according to the release.
