Police clear UW-Madison building after unconfirmed report of man with gun

A search at a University of Wisconsin-Madison building Wednesday morning was cleared after 25 minutes, officials said.

University of Wisconsin-Madison police said the department received a call at 11:26 a.m. from a person who was at the Law School Library, 975 Bascom Mall. The caller told authorities that someone had told the caller a person was armed with a gun in the Law School Library.

According to the report, officers were dispatched to the area and evacuated the Law School Library. A perimeter was established, and multiple officers searched and cleared the building. The university alert messaging system sent out alerts advising people to avoid the area.

At 12:05 p.m., officers completed the search and determined that there was no one inside the building with a weapon, and there was no threat to campus.

Police said there were no confirmed reports or statements of a weapon being seen by anyone in the law library.

At 12:09 p.m., UWPD said the building was all clear and the “situation at Law Library (is) over.”

Police are continuing to investigate.
