Police: armed man barricaded himself inside UW Hospital room

MADISON, Wis. — A man has been taken to a mental health institute after UW police say he barricaded himself inside a patient room at the University Hospital.
According to a press release, officers were called to the hospital around 6 p.m. Saturday evening. When crews arrived, the man told police he had a gun. After officers worked to de-escalate the situation verbally, they ultimately fired a less-lethal beanbag round, and the man was taken into custody. The press release said he was armed with a plastic knife. He received minor injuries from the beanbag.
Police say the man was taken to Winnebago Mental Health Institute.
