Playing politics with immigration reform
Reform efforts die
I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be an immigrant in this country this week watching the President of the United States and Republicans in the House of Representatives playing politics with your life. It must be heart-wrenching.
President Obama and House Republicans have decided that letting needed immigration reform die is acceptable if it improves their election chances this Fall.
How cynical is that?
Republicans know how important immigration is to the American economy if nothing else. The President could at the very least issue an executive order delaying deportations.
But both have concluded that the best interests of the nation and the dignity of human beings looking for a future can be ignored if it means being able blame the other during the upcoming campaigns.
This is not a proud moment for America, and it is another example of politics having sunk to really despicable depths.
