Platteville will honor tornado cleanup volunteers at event
Event features volunteer of the year awards, recognition for tornado relief volunteers
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Multiple Platteville organizations will be honoring volunteers who helped with storm cleanup at Party in the Park on Thursday, according to a release.
The Platteville Chamber of Commerce, the city of Platteville, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Platteville Main Street will be honoring the hundreds of volunteers and businesses that helped the city recover after the June 16 tornadoes, officials said.
The annual event has always been a tribute to volunteers, but this year’s event will be extended to everyone who helped the city recover, according to the release.
“We are asking for those individuals who volunteered to please call the chamber. We really want to have a list that we can present at Party in the Park that identifies those individuals,” Platteville Chamber of Commerce Director Kathy Kopp said in the release. “We want a full accounting as possible because it really is very very phenomenal.”
The event, held in the Platteville City Park at 75 N. Bonson Street, goes from 5-8 p.m. There will be free hot dogs, ice cream and milk provided by the Platteville Optimists and the Platteville Rotary Club.
The program starts at 5:30 p.m. with service clubs and nonprofit organizations’ volunteer of the year awards followed by recognition for the volunteers from the tornado relief, according to the release. After the program free music will be provided by the Wundo Band at 6:30 p.m.
Organizers ask anyone who knows the names of people who volunteered during the cleanup or has pictures from the storm to call 608-348-8888.
