Planning a weight-loss resolution for the new year? A free program in Janesville wants to help
JANESVILLE, Wis. — SSM Health St. Mary’s in Janesville will be launching a new type of weight-loss program to kick off 2019.
The free 10-in-10 program aims to help participants lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks, says creator Megan Timm.
Timm, who works as a community education specialist, says she saw the need for the program after conducting a community needs assessment, revealing that Rock County had an above average obesity rate.
“The goal is about weight loss,” Timm says. “But it’s also about healthy habits overall.”
Timm says one of the best things about the class will be the sense of community.
“So many people try to do this on their own,” she said. “We’re hoping the 10-in-10 program and the community support will bring everyone together.”
The class will meet at the hospital once a week on Mondays, starting Jan. 7 at 5:15 p.m. Each class will start with a confidential weigh-in, but then transition to educational sessions about a variety of topics.
“We will focus on how we perceive food, why we eat when we eat, how are we eating and if we are emotionally eating or stress eating,” Timm says. “It’s just paying attention to what we’re doing throughout the day when it comes to food.”
So far Timm says more than a dozen people are signed up for the course, but sign-ups are still open and free.
