A pilot and up to 50 farm animals are dead after a single-engine, vintage, military-style plane crashed into a Sheboygan County farm, officials said.

The plane crashed into a barn that housed young calves. The building is a total loss and about 40 to 50 animals were in the building at the time of the crash, according to officials with the Sheboygan Falls Fire Department.

The call reporting the crash came in around 4:06 p.m. The fire chief said he saw a “big mushroom cloud of smoke” and immediately called for mutual aid. The fire, which had spread to several buildings, was under control quickly.

The pilot was killed on impact and two employees at the barn were seriously injured in the crash. Officials said the plane was taking off when it crashed.

Fire officials said they are continuing to respond at the scene and are cleaning up fuel from the plane. The barn the plane crashed in was a total loss, and another building suffered significant damage.

The FAA will be investigating the crash. Officials said they could not confirm why the plane was in town. There are a lot of planes are in the area for the EAA AirVenture event in Oshkosh, they added.
