Phone scams continue, callers claim to work for sheriff’s dept.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office continues to receive complaints regarding a telephone scam, where the callers claim to be employees from the Sheriff’s Office.

The most recent incident targeted a Madison resident who was told he or she missed a grand jury summons and must pay a fee to avoid an arrest warrant.

The scammers identified themselves on the phone as Lt. Burns and Capt. Dalton. They instructed the victim to buy a Green Dot money pack and asked them to reveal the code on the back of the pack, which gives them access to the money. In this case, the victim was scammed out of $500.

The Dane County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating this incident, and are asking for anyone who may have information regarding the suspects to contact their office.
