Philip J. “Phil” Schaller
Madison – Philip J. “Phil” Schaller, age 76, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at his home, after a hard fought battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
He was born on June 7, 1937 in Dodgeville, WI the son of Theodore and Julia (Ryan) Schaller. Phil was a graduate of Barneveld High School. Soon after graduating, he entered the United States Army, serving in Germany from 1957-1959. He was united in marriage to Roseanna Tourdot on July 4, 1964 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Reedsburg. Together they lived and raised their family on the Northside of Madison. Phil was a dedicated employee of Carnes Co. in Verona, WI for over 40 years.
He was a charter member of both St. Peter Catholic Church and the Father Korback Knights of Columbus Council and he was also a member of the Sheet Metal Workers’ Union, Local #565. Phil enjoyed volunteering at St. Paul’s Food Pantry. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying Badger games with Bruce, bowling, especially all the years with Paul and watching the many games of his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He had a special place in his heart for Barneveld youth sports. Phil also enjoyed his many trips up-North to the Hirst cottage. Most importantly, he cherished his time with family and friends and had a soft spot for each and every one of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Roseanna; his daughters, Renee (Tim) Hinze, Sherry (Brian) Farr and Julie Schaller; nine grandchildren: Kayla and Connor Strassburg, Andrew, Megan and Tyler Farr, Keegan Duren, Ryen, Kaylee and Tyler Hinze; sister, Marilyn Arneson and brother, Jerry Schaller; mother-in-law, Viola Tourdot; in-laws, Agnes (Bernard) Hirst, Lorraine (Bruce) Fox, Francis (Lois), Jerome (Cindy) and Wayne (Lisa) Tourdot; and also many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Eric Farr; two brothers, Kenny and Larry; father-in-law, James Tourdot; and in-laws, Bill Arneson and Patricia Beck.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 5001 North Sherman Ave., with Msgr. Charles Schluter and Father Roger Nilles officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at the Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave. and also from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass on Monday at the church. Burial will follow at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Cemetery, Westport.
