Perion Carreon pleads guilty to pair of felony charges tied to Anisa Scott killing
MADISON, Wis. — A second defendant charged in connection with a 2020 shooting that killed 11-year-old Anisa Scott has pleaded guilty to a pair of felony charges tied to the deadly incident.
Perion Carreon, 21, pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime and attempted first-degree intentional homicide as a party to a crime.
As part of the plea, prosecutors dropped a repeater enhancer for Carreon’s attempted first-degree intentional homicide charge and dismissed four counts of felony bail jumping, according to online court documents.
Carreon was arrested in mid-August 2020, shortly after 11-year-old Anisa Scott was taken off life support after she was shot in the head on Madison’s east side. Police said they initially arrested him on suspicion of an unrelated crime while driving in a stolen vehicle. Carreon reportedly had a loaded handgun tucked in his waistband at the time of his arrest, according to officials with the Madison Police Department.
According to a criminal complaint filed against him, Carreon was driving the vehicle the three defendants were riding in at the time of the shooting. All three defendants reportedly shot at the car Scott was in, though it’s unclear which of the three fired the round that ultimately killed the 11-year-old.
Prior to accepting the plea, Carreon was scheduled to go to trial in late June.
Just last week, another defendant in the case — 18-year-old Andre Brown — pleaded guilty to an amended charge of first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime and one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide as a party to a crime during a Friday afternoon plea hearing.
A third defendant in the case, Jerry Ward, is scheduled to go to trial at the start of June for his alleged role in the killing. It’s unclear if either Brown or Carreon will take the stand during the trial.
Carreon’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 19 of this year.
