PD: ‘Porch pirate’ stole textbooks, attempted to pawn them
A Madison man is accused in a “porch pirate” theft in downtown Madison Tuesday afternoon.
Madison police said a package delivered to a 22-year-old man’s North Bassett Street home Tuesday morning was stolen.
Several hours later, 46-year-old Benjamin John Franklin Wood Jr. brought the four stolen textbooks to the University Book Store, 711 State St., and attempted to sell them, according to the report.
Police said employees were aware of Wood from previous pawn activity and refused to buy the books. Staff members also said they found the empty box in which the books had been delivered on top of one of the store’s free lockers. It included the victim’s name, mailing address and tracking information showing that the package had been delivered that morning.
Officers found Wood in the downtown area and arrested him on suspicion of theft and a parole violation. The textbooks were worth a few hundred dollars, police said.
