PD: Caller scams woman out of $60K by claiming her nephew has cancer
MADISON, Wis. — A Madison woman was scammed out of almost $60,000 by someone who claimed her nephew had been diagnosed with cancer, according to a release.
The 68-year-old woman got a call from someone claiming to be her brother, who said his son had been diagnosed with cancer and they were in need of financial help, police said.
Over several weeks, the woman withdrew funds from her credit union and sent cash to an address in Chicago, according to the release.
An employee at her credit union became concerned and contacted the police about the potential fraud.
