A man trying to break into a downtown apartment was arrested Thursday night after the resident heard him outside and called police, according to a release.

A 19-year-old woman living in the 600 block of North Frances Street called police around 8:30 p.m. after hearing a man cutting her window screen and jiggling the window, police said.

“Someone is literally two feet away from me,” the 19-year-old told police. “I don’t know if he had a weapon and what he was intending to do once he got inside.”

When officers got to the apartment, the man, 29-year-old Mauricio B. Mendez-Lera, was still outside the window trying to open it, officials said.

Mendez-Lera was arrested on several charges of attempting to commit burglary, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.

Mendez-Lera had several cellphones in his backpack when he was arrested, according to the release. Police are working to determine if any of the cellphones had been stolen.
