Over the moon about Moonhill Mercantile
Store combines market and general store vibe
For those on a sojourn to Mount Horeb, a stop at Moonhill Mercantile is a must. Its Main Street location, homey feel and lovely product assortment beckon shoppers to stay awhile and browse. The “mercantile” in the name is a nod to its general store feel with a tinge of country chic. It’s even a Best of the ‘Burbs winner in our readers’ poll this year.
In fact, owner Mary Jane Ellis says her 23-year-old gift and home shop is a destination for the locals and visitors from surrounding states. She’s especially proud of her loyal customer base and the fact that regulars bring their friends in to see the shop, too. Ellis says Moonhill is set apart because it’s one of the few downtown retailers that carry a variety of items, rather than specializing in a particular genre. Tempting treasures include soy candles, bath and body goodies, jewelry, paper products, home items and baby goods.
The 1888 building oozes character with original tin ceilings and has been a pharmacy, library, gift store and office throughout the years. It’s a shop that gives a sense of place and a taste of the community. And shoppers will be happy to bring home a piece of their visit with them–whether it’s an aromatic seasoning mix, scarf or classic board game.
“We have something for just about everybody,” says Ellis. “My favorite part of owning this is how proud everyone is of my store.
