Otis LeRoy Gilbertson

Otis LeRoy Gilbertson, age 88 of Hollandale died on Monday evening, October 27, 2014 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.

He was born on January 8, 1926 on the family farm in rural Hollandale to Martin and Nellie (Vamstad) Gilbertson. He grew up in rural Hollandale where he worked with his family on the family farm and attended Hollandale grade and high school where he graduated from in 1943. He served in World War II after he enlisted in the United States Navy, and served in the South Pacific in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima on the USS Sarpedon. After being discharged from service, Otis married Dorothy Isabelle Anderson on July 8, 1947. He worked for Severson Hardware in Hollandale where they lived in the apartment above the store and in 1949 he and Dorothy began farming together on their farm on the edge of Hollandale. In 1988, Otis and Dorothy built their retirement home overlooking the farm. Upon semi-retirement from farming, he became an insurance agent for almost 20 years for Mount Pleasant-Perry Mutual Insurance from Monticello and served in the company as secretary and vice-president.

Otis played home talent baseball in Hollandale along with his brothers. He was a charter member of the Olaf Martinson American Legion Post 510 and served as commander up until early 2014. On April 17, 2010 he was honored to participate in the inaugural Badger Honor Flight traveling to Washington, DC. He served the Hollandale community as a village board member for many years. Otis was baptized, confirmed and married in Hollandale Lutheran Church where he was a member his entire life and also sat on the churchcouncil.He was a member of the Hollandale Fire Department for 34 years where he served as secretary for many years. Otis instilled his love and dedication for farming Gildale Holsteins and serving in the fire department, in his son and grandson. His love of family and his wife of over 66 years, his heritage, his country, the community, the land, nature, and animals taught lessons to all. His courage, perseverance and optimism provided inspiration to all who knew and loved him.

Otis is survived by three children, Mark (Vickie Mowbray) Gilbertson of Hollandale, Julie Hoege of McFarland, and Tamra Exterovich of Madison; five grandchildren: Kari, Jennifer, Erik, Nikita and Alexandra; five great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; A sister in law Marie Gilbertson and a brother in law William Whitford, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy who died on December 22, 2013; his daughter Sheri Noble who died on July 30, 2005; and three brothers, Orin, Burnell and Martin, Jr.

A visitation will be held Sunday evening, November 2, 2014 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Hollandale Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be Monday morning, November 3, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the church. Rev. Bill White will officiate. Burial will be in the Hollandale Cemetery.
