One killed, several injured in massive I-41 pileup caused by white-out conditions
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. — Interstate 41 was closed for hours Wednesday after sudden white-out conditions caused 20 crashes, including a 48 car pileup.
Six people were hospitalized in that crash, and one woman was killed, according to a report from CBS 58. Twenty-six other people were treated for injuries at the scene.
Washington County Sheriff’s Office officials said the largest of the crashes happened on I-41 northbound, just south of Cedar Creek Road. Of the 48 cars involved in the pileup, 38 were damaged. Officials said they treated 26 people at the scene, in addition to the six who were hospitalized.
Video taken by William Van Aacken shows a semi swerve suddenly to avoid a jack-knifed semi on the left shoulder. It also shows a truck rolling off the right shoulder as other vehicles crash into each other on the side of the highway.
Authorities said they are investigating a total of 20 different accidents on I-41. Wisconsin State Patrol and the Slinger Police Department are helping with the investigations.
