Olen Lee Smith
Olen Lee Smith, age 89, passed away on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Oak Park Place in Middleton. “Smitty,” as he was known to his friends, was born in Oklahoma in 1923, but he considered California his home. He proudly served in the CBI Theatre of War with the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. After his discharge, he married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth, in Vincennes, Indiana. Together, during their 66 years of marriage, they had three great children and four even-greater grandchildren. Smitty was a long-time supporter of Notre Dame University and cheered the fighting Irish at every football game. In addition to his penchant for all things Irish, there was never a prouder “Papa.” He spent many afternoons taking his grandkids on long walks and teaching them to shout “Touchdown!” at the appropriate moments.
Smitty is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elizabeth, three sisters, daughter Kelly, son-in-law Brian, and four beautiful grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved sons Stephen and Michael, sister Naomi, and brothers Clifford and Earl.
Smitty’s family would like to thank the staff at Oak Park Place and Agrace Hospice for their care and concern. Interment will take place at a later date in California. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
