Old and New

had already heard the buzz. So I jetted over to see Coni Marotz, owner of Iconi Interiors (and former vice president of the rug division at Sergenian’s), to see for myself.

“It’s fun, it’s fresh, and people have been saying they really like it,” says Marotz.

Perhaps people like the dazzling, ever-changing window displays? The impeccably designed room vignettes or reclaimed vintage furnishings? Nah, it’s probably the vintage barware sets, perfect for a warm-weather cocktail. Whatever it is, Marotz is onto something, and she’s got the experience to match, with stints in women’s apparel and retail window design, and at Sergenian’s.

Marotz had been eyeing Jennifer Holien-Brewster’s Epoch space for a while when serendipity struck: the store was moving to State Street. “It was truly a gift,” says Marotz. “Sometimes things like that happen when the timing is right.”

Marotz’s approachable yet stylish look and mindset should jibe well with Madisonians, many of whom might feel their belt tightening on expenses. Surely an $16.50 soy candle, $21 pillow or, heck, a $225 duvet cover can lift the spirits of those who might not have the budget to redesign an entire room. And if you do have the budget, Marotz’s reclaimed, reupholstered furnishings are worth the investment.

The eclectic vignettes set up throughout the store make you wish your house looked like that. No worries: Marotz can help with design services, too. Her unfussy attitude is clearly evident, and her home life reflects her store philosophy, too.

“I tend to like things that make living more fun. When people come over to my house, I hand them a drink in a vintage glass. If it gets broken—it’s broken!” she says, smiling. “If you have beautiful things, you should use them.”

Here’s to finding some of those beautiful things at Iconi.
