Officials identify 2 men killed in head-on collision

Police: Man spits into, jumps on hood, roof of car, scares 2 women inside

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Department has identified the two men killed in a head-on collision east of Portage Monday night.

The crash happened around 7:20 p.m. at the corner of Wisconsin Highway 33 and Saddle Ridge East in the town of Fort Winnebago.

According to Columbia County Sheriff Dennis Richards, there were two occupants in each vehicle when the collision occurred.

The driver of the GMC truck, Adam C. Chester, 24, of Pardeeville, and passenger Jacob M. Bachman, 24, of Baraboo, suffered fatal injuries in the wreck, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Dennis Richards said in a news release Tuesday that it appeared Chester had overcorrected after entering the south shoulder of Highway 33, causing the truck to veer sharply back across the two-lane highway.

The two people in the other car were taken to Divine Savior Hospital for medical treatment.

Speed and alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash, officials said. The crash remains under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbia County Medical Examiner’s Office.
