Officials ID man killed in Janesville apartment fire
Investigators determine no foul play
JANESVILLE, Wis. — Janesville police say there are no signs of foul play in a fatal fire Sunday night in an apartment building.
Officers were called to a home at 603 S. Main St. at 8 p.m. Sunday for reports of a fire, according to a release. Several people were able to evacuate, but officers said one person wasn’t able to escape. Firefighters found the body of 38-year-old Dionelle L. Gates on the second floor of the apartment building.
Fire officials said preliminary results of the search of the residence and the autopsy did not indicate any signs of foul play.
Investigators are still trying to find the exact cause of the fire, but it appears the fire started on the second floor.
Janesville fire chief Randy Banker said they do not believe the area where the fire started had a working smoke detector.
Officials said an autopsy confirmed Gates died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.
