Officials: 14-year-old boy killed in Jefferson County snowmobile crash
TOWN OF SUMNER, Wis. — A 14-year-old boy was killed in a snowmobile crash in Jefferson County Saturday afternoon, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
Authorities said John Jaeckel, of Jefferson, was snowmobiling along a trail near County Road A around 4:30 p.m. when he missed a curve and went off the road in the town of Sumner.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said fellow riders tried to save the teen, but he died at the scene.
The principal of Fort Atkinson High School, Dan Halvorsen, told the Daily Jefferson County Union the teen was a freshman at Fort Atkinson High School.
Halvorsen said a counselor will attend each of the teen’s classes on Monday to comfort any grieving students. The high school was also open to students Sunday night to meet with teachers and counselors.
Counselors will also attend Fort Atkinson Middle School if requested, according to the Daily Jefferson County Union.
