Occupy Madison gone but homeless problem remains

Supporters want new permanent shelter

It’s been about a year since the Occupy Madison movement began, and on Saturday many gathered to show support for the homeless community.

In Reynolds Park, free food was served while many discussed the current homeless situation in Madison.

Supporters believe that a comprehensive year-round homeless center is what the city needs.

“We want a warming shelter for this winter, but even more important than that, we want a 24-hour, 365-day-a-year homeless center,” said Allen Barkoff.

City and county leaders have been considering locations for potential homeless shelters, but a location has not been agreed upon.
