Robert was born January 2, 1917, in Mauston, to William and Clara (Mistele) Schultz. On September 16, 1945, he married Jennie A. Polesky from Medway, MA.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-45 and was wounded in 1943 during the Allied offensive in Italy. Discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant, Robert was awarded a Purple Heart and a number of other medals.
Robert was a lifelong dairy farmer who returned to Mauston in 1954 when he bought his home farm from his father. Over the years, he and Jennie developed close relationships with their neighbors the Walters, Holigs, and Carpenters. Robert retired at age 62 to fish, hunt, and hike in Wisconsin and, sometimes, Wyoming. His nephews Albert Winter and Joel Winter and his grand-nephew Matthew Winter often accompanied him hunting deer, elk, and turkeys. And his other nephews and nieces visited frequently.
In January 2017, Robert celebrated his 100th birthday at Terrace Heights Retirement Community with about 100 family members and friends.
Robert is survived by his wife Jennie and his daughter Carol Schultz of San Diego. He is preceded in death by his daughter Barbara Schultz, his sisters Helen Schultz, Mildred Winter, Clara Schultz, and Agnes Ann Meyer, and his brothers, Harold Schultz, Walter Schultz, and William Schultz.
The funeral will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 517 Grayside Avenue, Mauston, at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 20, 2017. Visitation at the church will precede the service from 1:00-2:00 PM Wednesday. Military rites will take place immediately after the funeral service at the church, and a reception will follow.
