MADISON/ROCKFORD, ILL. - Loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Doris Jean Zumhagen, nee Wilkison, died on Sunday, December 17, 2017, surrounded by family after a short illness.
She was born on Jan 18, 1926, in Peru, Ind., the daughter of Frederick and Helen (Devaney) Wilkison. Doris graduated from high school in Peru, Ind. After graduation, she completed nurse's training, and worked temporarily as a nurse.
In June of 1945, Doris met the handsome young Vernon E. Zumhagen at a USO dance. The two were married on Sept. 24, 1945, in Kokomo, Ind., three months after their first date. They raised their three children in Rockford, Ill, where they were active in the community. She and Vernon retired to Tucson, Ariz., then moved to Madison, Wis. in February, 2003.
Doris was known by all who knew her as a kind, generous, energetic soul with an enthusiasm for art and travel.
Survivors include two sons, Mark (Virginia) and Paul (Ann); Brother Terry (Sondra); 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband; her parents; her daughter, Caryl Baringer and son-in-law, Richard Baringer; and her sister, Marilyn Parker.
Funeral services will be held at ST. ANDREW LUTHERAN CHURCH, 6815 Schneider Rd, Middleton, Wis., on Friday, December 22 at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Randy Hunter presiding. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Rockford, Ill., on Friday.
